Some agree that leadership consulting and coaching has a long history, its origins being traced back to the area of sports, in Ancient Greece, when warriors or athletes who competed in the original Olympic Games had to be coached by those who were much more competent and possessed more experience and bravery. However, the earliest possible forms of business management coaching are those that occurred from the 1940s to 1979. Business or organization consultants offered their services in exchange for small fees when such training became more individualized.
The next period, namely from the year of 1980 up until 1994, witnesses the rapid evolution of leadership consulting and coaching. What ought to be stated is that many other areas of service emerged, including career coaching, management coaching, outplacement, life coaching and so on and so forth. Leaders started to get more influence, more responsibilities had to be delegated, more people had to be employed and, therefore coaching became highly needed.
‘From 1995 to the present, the amount of executive and workforce coaching has continued to grow. There has been an increase in the number of publications devoted to coaching, in organizations that offer training to coaches, in the establishment of coaching organizations, and in the focus placed on coaching research by academia. Today, the number of coaches is estimated at 30,000 (International Coach Federation [ICF], 2007). However, because the field is wide open to anyone who wants to enter, it is difficult to know the exact number of people performing coaching services. Today’s coaches come from myriad backgrounds and professions, including business, law, teaching, human resources, and sports (Harris, 1999; Kilburg, 2000), and they don’t necessarily join coaching organizations.’ (http://www.opm.gov/, ‘COACHING, A Global Study of Successful Practices’).
